How do you get Dandruff?
Dandruff is a common non-contagious dry skin disorder called pityriasis cepitis. It can be recognized when small flakes accumulate on the scalp and may sometimes be seen on the shoulders. This does not need any medical attentions and can be treated with moisturizers, hot oil treatments, shampoos and conditioners. Pityriasis Cepatis, will show up on occasion and possibly during weather changes. Dandruff can affect any and everyone, no matter the texture of the hair. Some dandruff may need to be treated by a dermatologist; this dandruff is called pityriasis capitis and can be controlled through prescribed shampoo. Pityriasis Capitis Simplex will produce larger flakes and stick to the scalp.
*Side Note: A common misdiagnosis of dandruff we give ourselves is, in fact, product buildup on the hair strand. Dandruff will be produced from the scalp and will not be heavily concentrated on hair strands.
How Helpful Are Dandruff Shampoos?
Dandruff shampoos prescribed by the dermatologist will contain ketoconazole pyrithione, zinc or other ingredients. Most over-the-counter (OTC) products will not help the issue – only mask it! Due to the product being mass-produced, the quality of the active ingredients gets compromised. For example, one of the main ingredients in the most popular OTC dandruff shampoos is sodium laureth sulfate or SLS. SLS is a harsh detergent used in a lot of OTC shampoos due to its low cost and bubble-producing capabilities – the cute part of thinking you’ve conquered the dandruff! OTC shampoos may also contains harmful ingredients called zinc carbonate smithsonite; this is used to give the products its opaque or cloudy look. Products of this nature are not going to help the issue of getting rid of dandruff – it’s going to coat your scalp and suffocate/ mask the dandruff!
